Eating Healthy: Preventing Obesity In today’s society, obesity is becoming more serious than ever. Due to the fact, most individuals do not have healthy eating habits and are not active as they should be. Eating healthy is a major part of having a healthy body. Without good nutrition, our bodies become susceptible to many different health risks. While obesity can occur genetically, eating healthy can help prevent it. Obesity is a problem all over the world, with more than one billion people over weight; at least three- hundred million of them are obese (World Health organization 2009).
Obesity is a major risk for diseases, including type two- diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer (World Health organization 2009). Health wise, the consequences increase of early death and serious conditions that reduce the overall quality of life. One of the major concerns is the increasing rate of child obesity (World Health organization 2009). This situation is really rising and getting more in the way of living a healthy life. More people need to be aware of the seriousness of obesity which health risk like heart disease can affect one’s life. Many health risks are associated with obesity.
The most common of them all is Congestive heart failure; [this is a condition where the heart is not pumping enough blood to other parts of the body] (Famous Chris, 2007). More heart problems like an enlarged heart, resulting in an un-normal sized heart an outcome of a thickening heart muscle (Famous Chris, 2009). Next is Cor Pulmonale, this is when the right ventricle is large. This is the result of high blood pressure in the lungs caused by lung disease. Pulmonary Embolism is the blockage of the Pulmonary artery by a blood clot, fat, air, amniotic fluid, injected talc, and clumped tumor cells.
The outcome of blocking this artery results in difficulty breathing, painful breathing, and unstable blood circulation. Obese women can suffer from menstrual disorders like Fibroid Uterus. A risk causing physical or emotional problem, that interferes with the normal menstrual cycle. This results in painful cramps, and heavy/light bleeding (Famous Chris, 2009). Being overweight can come with numerous other health risks also. Obesity can affect the daily lives of many people. Some individuals suffer from shortness of breath, sleep apnea, and other respiratory complications.
When a very obese person does not receive enough oxygen during sleep, the brain is not sending a signal to your body to breath. Excessive weight on the chest makes it hard for an individual to take deep breaths. Pickwickian Syndrome is the combination of severe obesity, suffering from obstructive sleep apnea causing hypoxia and hypercapnia resulting in marked daytime somnolence and chronic respiratory acidosis (Famouschris. com). Obesity also has psychological affects; depression is number one on the list. Depression is state of sadness and despair; it interferes with one’s social life and daily routines.
The condition can affect self-esteem making a person feel worthless. In my opinion, no one should ever have to feel this way. These risks are not just physically harmful but also mentally harmful. If this is a lot for fully-grown adult to go through, imagine the obese youth. According to Colorado State University (2009), “[ Certain genetic characteristics may increase an individual’s susceptibility to excess body weight, however, there are likely to be many genes involved and a strong interaction between genetics and environment that influences the degree of excess body weight. ” (Para 5. ) When a child is born, they do not come into the world already preconditioned to over -eat. The eating routine is up to the parents or guardians to teach the child proper eating habits. Obese children can incur most of the health risk as an adult. The Wikipedia (2009) website [Some of the other disorders would include liver disease, early puberty or menarche, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, skin infections, and asthma and other respiratory problems. ] Obese children have a rough social life if any.
They go to school, youth centers, and playgrounds to someone taunting them constantly. This is not building them up; in fact, it is tearing them down. Afterwards they look to food to stop the pain. In my opinion, it is imperative to encourage children positively to eat healthy, and the importance of physical activity. When healthy eating habits are absent, your body accumulates unhealthy body fat. Resulting in more body fat than muscle this leaves the body overweight. Consuming more calories than the body needs, the body turns the unused calories to fat.
Genetic factors play some part in the development of obesity — children of obese parents are 10 times more likely to be obese than children with parents of normal weight (Google Health, 2009). The practice of eating the right food is essential in maintaining a healthy body weight. Monitoring the level of saturated fat and sugar, and putting the correct nutrients into the body will help. Physical activity works along with healthy eating; when one exercises daily, it helps burn excess calories. Promotion of healthy eating habits can easily slim the chances of the health risk involved with obesity.
By doing so individuals should start consuming more fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Cutting down on the highly fatty and sugary food that on a daily basis. One should learn the difference between good fats and bad fats. The choice of meat included in a diet should be lean meat, which is less fat. Green leafy vegetables are a better choice when the decision to eat healthy is in mind. As far as fruit goes, citrus fruits are healthy. Use plant based oils to cook and bake with, olive and canola oil is unsaturated fat. It is important to avoid Tran’s fat in things like fried foods, and baked goods.
Prevent using butter and substitute it for margarine. Dairy products can pack the pounds on also, try low fat milk, and cut down on cheese. Bad fats in the diet can increase risk for diseases, and the good fat can decrease the chance of disease. Physical activity is also important; everyone needs exercising along with a healthy diet. People need at least thirty minutes a day of exercise. Exercise burns the unused calories in your system to prevent it from turning into body fat. An inactive individual that is obese is not healthy; they are more susceptible to risks an active person is not.
There are ways one can become more active in ways beside traditional exercise. Use the steps versus the elevator and walk instead of driving short distances. There are many ways of being active throughout the course of the day. When an individual is planning to lose weight, they have to consider more than just dieting. One has to change the lifestyle that previously occupied the body, and make a new one. After a set exercise routine and healthy eating routine is accomplished, one should feel and see some change. This will bring about a more positive attitude about life.
Everyone should be aware of the fad diets advertised all over the place. It is important for an individual to find a healthy diet that fits them. Not all diets are for everyone, it is best to consult a physician, dietician, or personal trainer. Having moral support helps in situations such as losing weight; close friends or relatives you trust. Setting goals too high will become an obstacle, set reachable goals. Most important, maintain the healthy lifestyle once goals have been met. A maintenance back-up plan must be setup. The weight will come off, but if not maintain the healthy routine it will come back.
Once started on the healthy track one must stay there to maintain the healthy body weight. Although obesity can occur genetically, eating healthy can prevent it. Eating the right foods and getting ample exercise throughout the day. Cutting the chances of severe risks of being overweight down, one can feel confident that the right thing to do is take care of the body. The goals are to lessen the chances as much as possible for heart disease and other unwanted risk. Obesity is rising in the United States, and is increasing year by year.
It is time for us as people to start caring about our lively hood, and the well-being of our bodies. In my opinion, if an individual takes care of their body, then their body will take care of them.
