Some people learn fast while others learn slowly. Others can only learn when they are in groups with other people with the same objectives.
Relatively, people that are able to learn quickly, tend to understand something all at once. However, those that learn slowly tend to learn something by constant repetition. There are several different types of multiple intelligences. In his book, “Frames of Mind”, Howard Gardner (1983) shows us that there are eight different types of intelligences. The Linguistic intelligence involves ones ability to read, write, and communicate with words. Linguistic learners are good at reading, writing and telling stories. They are also good at memorizing names, places, dates and have a good sense of trivia.
Their best way to learn is by saying, hearing and seeing words. They are nicknamed “The Word Player”. Logical and Mathematical intelligence has to do with a person’s ability to look for patterns, reason and think in a logical manner. It is often associated with scientific thinking. Logical learners often like to experiment, figure things out, work with numbers. They ask questions when they don’t understand, explore patterns and relationship. These learners are good at math, reasoning logic and problem solving. They learn best by categorizing and classifying information.
They work with abstract and patterns or relationships. They are nicknamed, “The Questioner”. Visual and Spatial intelligence has to do with the ability to think in pictures and visualize outcomes. This skill should not be thought of only in visual terms. Blind children often develop spatial intelligence. These learners like to draw, build, design and create things. They often daydream a lot, look at pictures, watch movies and play with machines. They are very good at imagining things, sensing changes, mazes, reading maps and charts.
Their best way to learn is to visualize “using the mind’ eye”. They work with color and pictures. Musical intelligence gives a person the ability to make and compose music, sing, and use rhythm to learn. It is important to note that functional hearing is needed for a person to develop this intelligence in pitch and tone, but not so for rhythm. The music learners like to sing, hum tunes, listen to music, play an instrument and respond to music. They have the ability of picking up sounds, remembering melodies, pursuing interests and keeping time.
They can also notice pitches and rhythms. They are called, “The Music Lover”. Bodily and Kinesthetic intelligence has to do with the ability to use your body movements to solve your problems. This may contradict the belief that mental and physical activities do not relate to each other. They like to move around, touch and talk. They make use of body language. They are good at physical activities and crafts. They learn best by touching, moving, interaction with space and processing knowledge through body sensations. They are called, “The Mover”.
Interpersonal intelligence involves the ability to use your social skills and good communication skills with others. They may also show the ability to empathize and understand other people. These learners have lots of friends and they enjoy talking to people. They join many groups. They are very good at understanding people, communicating and leading others, organizing events, manipulation and mediating conflicts. The best way for them to learn is by sharing, comparing, relating, cooperating, interviewing with people. They are called, ”The Socializer”.
Intrapersonal intelligence involves the ability to reflect, analyze, and contemplate problems independently. A person may look upon himself or herself to assess one’s own feelings and motivations. Intrapersonal learners like to work alone. They prefer to pursue their own interests. They are good at understanding themselves. They can focus clearly on their feelings and dreams. They follow their instincts and stay original. The best way for them to learn is by working alone, doing individual projects and self-paced instruction. They are called, “The Individual”.
Naturalistic Intelligence has to do with the ability to make distinctions in the natural world and the environment. Naturalistic learners like to go outdoors. They enjoy observing natural occurrence, being with animals and collecting natural objects. They are good at categorizing things from the natural world. They are also skilled in using sensory skills, noticing environment, learning about objects and species of natural world. The learn best by plainly being outside, seeing, smelling, touching, tasting things and observations. They are called the, “The Outdoorsman”.
When I got my profile results I wasn’t really surprised. According to my results, I am a visual and spatial learner. I already knew that because I enjoyed creating and designing things. However not everything about the visual/spatial intelligence category I exhibit. For instance I don’t imagine things neither do I daydream. I don’t play with machines either. I also found out that I am equally a logical and mathematical learner. However, the results were not 100% accurate. It’s true that I like figuring things out, but I don’t like working with abstract. I use reasoning and logic but I’m not inquisitive.
Without the test I wouldn’t have known that I had a logical intelligence. I am 17 years old living in the United States. The average male aged 15-16, living in the United States is mainly intrapersonal and interpersonal. There are varieties of different intelligence. Howard Gardner tells us that linguistic and logical intelligence is the main focus of lessons taught in a classroom. You may think you have a certain type of intelligence but you just might be wrong. If you take the test at www. bgfl. org, it will show you the type of intelligence you have.
