Reasons such as; religious or ethical, or on another note, to prevent health problems like; obesity or coronary artery disease and the plenty of other disease that are related. The million dollar question though is without meat in their diet, do vegetarians miss out on important nutrients? Sunny Slam writes on vegetarianism and the benefits and faults of taking on that type of lifestyle. Sunny provides many legitimate facts from credible sources. In the article Slam doesn’t directly tell us readers that he is in favor of sectarianism, but he tends to side with making the switch to a vegetarian lifestyle.
He provides us with a balanced article with information for and against vegetarianism. It fulfills the need of the paper and elaborates on solid facts from recent studies and credible M. Do’s. One of the ways that Slam provides information in favor of vegetarianism is through studies for, the American Dietetic Association. The DAD gives out a lot of credible information with direct quotes from Neal Bernard, president of physicians Committee for Responsible Medicare (APPC) a non-profit organization for prevent medicines. The American Dietetic Association says, “Vegetarian diets are nutritionally sound” (p. , Slam) and John McDougal – a physician and founder of the McDougall Plan for Healthy Living – says, “Almost all our essential nutrients come from plants…. Plants make eleven of thirteen known vitamins” (p. 4, Slam). With an ethos that is portrayed very strong throughout the article, the logic of the argument is really easy to follow. Slam explains pathos very well, in which, the introduction of his article explains why individuals may make the change to a vegetarian lifestyle. Slam concludes his introduction with the question, “How safe is the experiment? 2) This warrants pathos, in that it catches the reader’s attention and will come off as more of an emotional question and answer, versus the usual factual information stated. Sunny does not elaborate on the meat-based diet with facts of how it is very unhealthy for people and focuses more on a plant- based diet. He assumes the population knows most about meat-based lifestyle and needs to be informed about the plant-based diet. This actually weakens Salaam’s article, turning a very informative essay into almost a biased-informative essay.
On another note, all important terms are repeated but in different Ways to show the same facts, in different cases. It has a casual tone to it that is an easy read for the audience that is well-developed to easily comprehend. Slam begins the body of the article by stating that even diet experts say that a vegetarian lifestyle can be more beneficial than a meat- eaters diet, if a variety of plant-based foods are consumed. It was been tidied and proven to be true so far, that eating less meat is very beneficial. “A 12-year study of 34,1 92 people found that on average, group members lived 10 years longer than the general population” (8).
Based on a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine, it is said that “Americans suffer from having too much to eat, not too little” (8). Which in turn, isn’t that hard to comprehend while, Slam says that according to Neal Bernard, ‘Vegetarian have a 40% less risk of cancer and much less risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, dined disease and other problems that are common among meat-eaters” (10) As any diet goes, it needs to be well planned in order to be beneficial. If a vegetarian diet is well planned it is said to be the most beneficial diet around.
Slam uses this information in favor of vegetarianism, which is yet another way he portrays his affordability without clearly stating he does. These facts are legitimate and provide the reader or researcher with a feeling that Slam fully understands the subject matter. Slam continues to provide sufficient information on specific details of the vegetarian diet. He talks about the many types of vegetarian diets. The most popular ones of the era are; vegan, local- vegetarian, local-vivo-vegetarian or flexing diets. A plant-based diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes and nuts.
These foods are emphasized because they are high in fiber, vitamins and many more nutrients. In result Of this, the daily calorie intake will be much lower, leading to weight loss and a lower risk of illness or disease. By replacing meat with whole grains, legumes, nuts and fruits, you will actually boost your energy levels. By talking about the specifics of a vegetarian diet, Slam lets the reader make their own opinion based off of the information, rather than him being assertive in that vegetarianism is the only way to live.
Slam barely touches on the many misunderstandings about vegetarianism, so more research was needed in that area. A common misconception about it is, it causes a deficiency in nutrients. This is true, but it is just like any other diet, but only if the individual doesn’t follow the vegetarian diet properly, he/she will become nutrient deficient. That’s why there is a vegetarian food guide pyramid, to help people and guide them in the right direction for a healthy vegetarian diet.
Therefore, with all the extra benefits coming from the vegetarian diet in the first place, if you just follow the guide carefully, it will be an exceptional lifestyle that is indeed life changing. I feel that, if Slam would have provided more information like this, his article would have been much more efficient for a better range of information from all point of views. Another common misconception of vegetarianism is eating disorders. Some people believe that once an individual switches to the vegetarian lifestyle, they see the results and want more, leading to an eating disorder, such as anorexia.
This is a false belief, and the opposite is actually true. Many individuals obtain an eating disorder early in life, and to enable the disorder, they choose to be vegetarian, easing the pain. In conclusion, with all the recent studies and doctors inferring that a well- planned vegetarian diet is very beneficial, more so than the average American diet. With a plant based diet you will consume fewer calories, lose weight in unwanted places, ease the digestive and immune system and prevent heart disease. All because your replacing a high calorie, high fat and cholesterol diet with high fiber, high protein foods.
There isn’t a reason why the vegetarian diet is beneficial to most individuals in today’s world. Replacing animal products with plant-based products will make your life healthier and more enjoyable. Overall Slam provides solid information on the vegetarian lifestyle and how it is beneficial both physically and economically. Based on the Pad’s of individuals and the American Dietetic Association, the advice that is revived is very helpful and legitimate leaving the reader feeling informed and persuaded to switch their lifestyle(s).
